Greens, Guests & Growth

Spring has sprung. It’s going to be 76 (!) degrees here in NYC today which means it’s going to be very difficult for me to get much, if any, work done today. After spending the weekend glued to the TV watching the Masters, there is truly only one thing I want in this life:

We need Central Park to be converted into a golf course. What a beautiful site. Would most likely be the most expensive round in the world… but so so worth it.

After living in NYC for a while, grass becomes the equivalent of a Florida kids’ snow. Every time I see it, I go crazy.

Side note, I will be accepting any & all invites to go to the Masters next year. If you have something you’d like to sell me, bring me to Augusta & consider it done.

Sorta not kidding.

The last 7 days were truly exhausting. There was a big industry event here in NYC called the Whalies so a TON of DTC & ecommerce folks were in town. It’s always a weird conundrum when you spend the week networking & away from the “deep work.” On the one hand, I met some incredible new people, but on the other, I didn’t check off nearly as many items on my “to-do list” that I should have.

But, I’ll take some good networking over slouched at a computer all damn day. Just means I gotta lock-in this week, Davis “Davis Clarke” Clarke style.

If you don’t know who this is, you’re probs reading the wrong newsletter. Working on getting him on Trust Fun as a guest 👀

Some other housekeeping notes….

I went on the Turning Pro podcast this past week. You can watch / listen to the episode here if you so desire:

I like being a guest on podcasts. It’s (selfishly) really fun to talk about yourself. I think it’s a good exercise for networking as well. Ben & Adrian were super nice to have me on.

We talked a lot about my theater background, something I’m super proud of. I think I can reserve that story of how I became a thespian for another time, but for now… Here’s a picture of me acting (like a fool) in college:

Anyways, welcome back to week 26 of Trust Fun. The word’s greatest newsletter. Let’s get into it…

Email is King

I’m not even close to an expert. I’m actually kind of an idiot. BUT, for some insane reason that I can’t explain, ~14k people read my lunatic writing each week. Collecting emails has made this newsletter, Trust Fun, possible. To anyone thinking about starting any type of business, my one piece of advice that I always give (aka the ONLY piece of advice I’d ever give because, again, I am an idiot) is to start collecting emails immediately.

My new (best) friend Alex validates this. I think people really do sleep on the importance of email. Sure, it’s not as sexy is Instagram followers or TikTok views, but the value is unmatched. If you’re an entrepreneur, at any stage, find a way to collect emails. It will pay off in dividends.

Especially for established brands, collecting & reactivating emails is VITAL. But how to you find a competitive advantage that actually works? At Mugsy, we’re always looking for an edge. One specifically being Revenue Roll. I actually just met Michael (the founder & CEO) of Revenue Roll this past week at the Whalies & his business is SICK. They identify lapsed & bounced emails of high intent shoppers & are adding up to 100k+ legit emails into your funnel every month.

Let’s say Scottie is on your email list because he added to cart 6 months ago while perusing on his work laptop. (Can’t you tell I’m watching the Masters right now?) Anyways, unfortunately, Scottie hasn’t visited the site in 90 days or engaged with an email so Klaviyo identifies him as a lapsed user & kicks him off your list.

BUT WAIT. Scottie has actually visited your site on his phone & home computer in those 90 days… However Klaviyo (dummy) doesn’t know this, so they delete him. Revenue Roll, on the other hand, knows this. And if you had their pixel firing, Revenue Roll would add Scottie back on to your list. You wouldn’t believe how many people you are probs losing out on….

Pretty damn cool. I think we found a competitive edge with Revenue Roll. Sign up for a demo session with Michael here. Also, please DO NOT ask him how badly I kicked his ass in Padel last week.

Rock on everyone. Thanks for sticking with me for 26 damn weeks. Wait a second, that’s officially half a year. Holy shit! I’m celebrating. 6 months of Trust Fun.

What a ride. Have an awesome week.
